Mediation

Primeau Law offers an alternative to litigation for our community. Mediation is a voluntary process whereby two parties discuss their disputes and an impartial third party assists them in reaching a settlement.  Due to this special resolution structure, our clients who chose Mediation as the preferred pathway to arriving at a resolution cannot retain Family Law services after the Mediation intake process has begun, nor can a client move to Mediation with Jessica after consulting for her services for individual representation.

Our objective for Mediation is to allow parties to have control over the resolution of their family law matters, and to reduce the overall cost of arriving at a resolution together through the guidance provided by Jessica in neutrality to the issues at hand. We always recommend our Mediation clients to seek out individual legal representation for review of the resolution after negotiations have been completed.

In Mediation, we address:

  1. Parenting issues (decision making responsibility and parenting time/schedules)

  2. Child support

  3. Spousal support

  4. Property issues (including possession, ownership, equalization, and division of property).

What is the difference between choosing a family lawyer and choosing a Mediator?

When you hire Primeau Law as your ‘family lawyer’, we represent one party (you) to negotiate a resolution with the other (who may or may not be represented by their lawyer).

When you hire Primeau Law for Mediation services, we help both parties resolve the issues arising from the breakdown of their relationship in a manner determined by the parties themselves.  This allows the parties to create a solution to their very personal family issues on their own terms, employing a self-guided process, and to not have a solution imposed upon them, for example by a Court. As Mediators, we do not make arguments. Instead, we use our knowledge and skill base to help our clients come to a resolution in accordance with the current laws that govern family law. We will always recommend our Mediation clients to seek out individual representation with a family lawyer for review of the resolution after negotiations have been completed in Mediation.

It is important to note that if you decide to choose Mediation, as your mediator, Jessica cannot also represent you as your lawyer, even after the Mediation  has terminated.
